[ARCHIVED] Weekly Update Article September 23, 2019

Overall the Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 930 calls for service/events.  Our higher call volumes occurred in the  following areas:  Alarms (26), Car Deer Accidents (12), Assist Citizen/Motorist Assists (29), Check Well Beings (32), Domestic Disputes (11), Shoplifting Complaints (29), Larcenies (16), Disorderly Person or Subject (10), MDOP (9), Personal Injury Crashes (11), Property Damage Crashes (19), Suspicious Subject/Situation/Vehicle (61), Traffic Hazards (40), Traffic stops (206), Traffic Violations (47), and Civil Complaints (15).

October is National Crime Prevention Month. Crime Prevention is an area where it takes law enforcement agencies, businesses, neighborhoods, and citizens all working together with a common goal of preventing crimes against ourselves, our family, neighbors, workplaces, etc.

Your vigilance is so important. Daily my office receives calls for service such as Check Well Beings; Suspicious Subjects, Situations, or Vehicles; people driving recklessly on our roadways, etc. Just to give you some idea of the number of calls we have received so far this year in these areas: Check Well Beings – 759, Road Rage – 124, OWI – 312, Suspicious Situation – 809, Suspicious Subject – 408, Suspicious Vehicle 481. These are all great examples of citizens being alert, aware of their surroundings, and caring for the safety of others. And these are just calls the Sheriff’s Office has received. The same is also true in your communities and local law enforcement agencies. Your attention to details, things that seem out of the ordinary, and behaviors you observe all contribute to crime prevention.

A great example - Just recently my office received a call from a citizen in Delta Township. She had noticed that she hadn’t seen her neighbor in a few days, mail was piling up in mailbox, and her car was parked in her driveway. Out of concern for her neighbor, she called asking if we would check her neighbor’s home. It turned out that the neighbor had suddenly taken ill and was recuperating at another location. Now the concerned caller has piece of mind and the neighbor knows others care enough about her safety to ensure she was ok.

Thank you for your help in all the ways preventing crime is being accomplished.

Yours in Public Safety,

Sheriff Tom Reich
