Weekly Update Article July 6, 2020

Overall the Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 813 calls for service/events.  Our higher call volumes occurred in the following areas:  Traffic Stops – 112, Suspicious Subject/Situation/Vehicle – 47, Traffic Violations – 43, Fireworks Complaints – 39, Assist Citizen/Motorist Assists – 38, Traffic Hazards – 36, Check Well Beings – 33, Property Damage Crashes – 24, Alarms – 23, Shoplifting Complaints – 19, Car/Deer Accidents – 18, Domestic Disputes – 18,  Civil Complaints – 15, Unwanted Subject – 14, Larcenies – 10, and Property Damage Hit and Run – 7.

Recently, one of our citizens called to let me know they had gotten a threatening call from someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration.  Fortunately, our citizen recognized it as a scam and did not give them any information.

Scams are increasingly prevalent and the scammers are becoming more elaborate and conniving.  I don’t want to see any of our citizens become victims of these predators.  The following is from the Social Security Administration -

Thieves are misusing the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) authority in phone schemes to trick you into giving them money or personal information.  They state there is a problem with your Social Security number or account.  They claim there has been suspicious or fraudulent activity and you could be arrested or face other legal action.  They even spoof SSA’s main customer-service telephone number on caller ID.  Don’t believe them.  Don’t provide any information.  SSA employees will never threaten you for information or promise benefits in exchange for information.  In those cases, the call is fraudulent.  Just hang up.  If you suspect you’ve been contacted by an SSA scammer call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

I want to thank all Eaton County citizens who bring incidents such as these to my attention.

Yours in Public Safety,

Sheriff Tom Reich
