The Eaton County Department of Construction Codes is dedicated to providing the best services possible. Our staff members have spent many years providing quality service to the local communities within Eaton County and as our mission statement says, "Our goal is to provide a safer place to live, work and play", making the quality of life in Eaton County better for everyone.

Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the permit holder, homeowner/contractor to be knowledgeable of the appropriate Federal, State, Local laws, ordinances and building, electrical, mechanical and/or plumbing code sections related to the project and to make sure the project meets all of these code requirements along with the ability to complete the project that has been planned in a timely manner. 

Licensing

Homeowners, please remember to use only State of Michigan licensed contractors. State law prohibits unlicensed persons from acting as a contractor and using them limit’s the recourse you have if the project doesn’t go as planned. Always ask to see their license and verify it by using the link to the State of Michigan licensing verification website listed under Helpful Links in the column on the left side of this page.

Department of Construction Codes Responsibilities

The Eaton County Department of Construction Codes responsibility is to inspect the work and verify its compliance with the code. Inspectors cannot be involved in the planning of any work or require any specific materials or equipment. Inspectors cannot advise anyone on how to do the work or solve any problems with the building construction, electrical wiring, plumbing or mechanical systems.

Inspectors are limited to answering specific code questions that may be asked and determining if what has been completed, or what work is proposed to be done will meet the appropriate code requirements. It is not the responsibility of the Eaton County Department of Construction Codes or any individual inspector to inform anyone of appropriate Federal, State, Local laws, ordinances or specific building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing code sections.
