Medications and Sharps
The term includes several types: non-prescription (over the counter medications), non-controlled prescription, and controlled prescription. Within these types medications can be either solid or liquid. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy offers an interactive Household Drug Take Back Map. This map describes the difference between these types of medications and specific take back locations within the state for each. These items are also accepted at our collection events held annually in May, June, and August. For more information about safe storage and proper disposal of medicines click here.

Generally this term includes items like needles, lancets, syringes, and auto injectors (like an epinephrine pen for example). These items are unsafe for regular trash disposal, as they are considered biohazard waste. For convenient disposal, check with you local pharmacy or insurance company - some medications offer specific mail back programs. These items are also accepted at our collection events held annually in May, June, and August.
