Safety rules for children that are home alone after school – With school starting in many areas now, for some of us this may be the first time we have kids home alone after school. Here are a few things to talk to your kids about to keep them safe.

As parents, you are the best judge to know when to consider whether your child is ready to be unsupervised. If you feel they are, it is important to review important safety rules. Parents and children should discuss how to react if the phone rings or if someone knocks at the door – it is never a good idea for a child to let anyone know they are home alone. In addition, if a child arrives home and the door is open or a window is smashed, the child should go directly to a trusted neighbor for help. In addition, it is also important to make sure your child knows:

  • How and when to dial 911.

  • Your address and phone number.

  • The name, location and phone number where mom and/or dad work.

  • The name, phone number and address of a trusted neighbor.

  • The name, phone number and address of another emergency contact person, such as a grandparent or family friend.

  • How to efficiently lock and unlock the doors and windows in your home.

  • Never to open the door to a stranger or let anyone unfamiliar to them know--either on the phone or at the door--that they are without adult supervision.

  • First aid for minor injuries.

  • Safety procedures in case of fire or injury.

Yours in Public Safety,

Sheriff Tom Reich
