(Charlotte, MI) - Douglas R. Lloyd, Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney, announced today that on June 27, 2019, Israel Benancio Mora (age 22) of Delta Township, Lansing, MI was sentenced to a minimum of 9 years and 7 months in prison, with credit for 290 days already served, after his conviction for child abuse first degree in case number 18-020078-FC. The sentencing occurred before 56th Circuit Court Judge John D. Maurer.
Back in October of 2017, the 7-week-old victim was brought to the emergency room. Medical staff quickly discovered that the victim had fresh subdural hemorrhages around his brain, bleeding around his spine, a clavicular fracture, and multiple rib fractures. The baby also had a bite mark on his cheek and bruising on his buttocks. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Adrianne Van Langevelde handled the case and noted that the victim suffered horrific injuries at the hands of the defendant. She is satisfied with the sentence and happy to note that the child is recovering well.
Prosecutor Lloyd said, "Protecting the vulnerable members of our community is one of the most important functions of government. This sentence will ensure that the defendant cannot harm the children of this community for at least the next 9 years. I appreciate the hard work of Eaton County Sheriff's Office Det. Rick Buxton and my staff for obtaining justice for the young victim in this matter."
Mora was represented by Attorney David B. Carter Jr. of Charlotte, MI.
