Effective on July 1, 2020 the Eaton County 911 surcharge decreased from $1.75 to $1.65. This surcharge applies to all devices capable of calling 911 in Eaton County, with the exception of pre-paid wireless devices (which are assessed a 5% state surcharge).
The surcharge was approved by Eaton County voters in 2017 to pay for a new, $13 million public radio system, financed over 10 years. The radio system came online in the first quarter of 2020 and is being used by all public safety agencies in the county, with the exception of the City of Lansing. The board of commissioners approved the new surcharge rate at a special meeting on April 29, 2020. The surcharge is reviewed annually by the board of commissioners.
