Weekly Update Article February 28, 2022

Between February 20-27, 2022, Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 792 calls for service.  Our higher call volumes occurred in the following areas:  Traffic Stops-200, Suspicious Subject/Situation/Vehicle-45, Assist Citizen/Motorist Assists-30, Property Damage Crashes-29, Alarms-27, Traffic Hazards-25, Shoplifting Complaints-21, Civil Complaints-20, Car/Deer Accidents-20, Personal Injury Crashes-17, Domestic Disputes-16, Traffic Violations-15, Parking Violations-14, Check Well Beings-13, Larcenies-11, and Unwanted Subject-11.

This important information was recently in a Detroit Free Press article and is something all of us need to be aware of -

AVOID MEETUPS GONE WRONG - Online resale or e-commerce websites make it easy to buy and sell items to your neighbors.   Log into Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc., and you'll see used KitchenAid stand mixers, Red Wings tickets, furniture and much more.

Most transactions happen according to plan and both parties go on their merry way after exchanging the item for payment.   It is easy to feel comfortable arranging to meet someone with a profile picture and nearby location, like on Marketplace.  But these meetups also turn people into sitting ducks with cash, vulnerable to theft, robbery or, on rare occasions, homicide.

Last December, several Southfield residents were robbed when attempting to sell PlayStation 5 video game consoles.  The suspects would appear to pay via CashApp, but as the seller waited for the payment, suspects would steal the item and drive away.  In some instances, suspects insinuated having a gun.  A very similar incident happened a few weeks ago in Eaton County.  The suspects were arrested after a pursuit.

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office has “safe transaction zones” designated in the parking lots of the Delta Township Substation and the main office in Charlotte.  Each location is designated by signs, painted parking spaces, and monitored by cameras.  Not only are these areas used for online sale transactions but are also used for child visitation custody pickups.

At a bare minimum, meet in a well-lit place, bring a charged cell phone, save the phone number of local authorities, live-share your location with a friend or family member, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Yours in Public Safety,

Sheriff Tom Reich
