[ARCHIVED] Weekly Update Article April 10, 2023

Between April 2-9, 2023, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 827 calls for service/events.  Our higher call volumes occurred in the following areas:  Traffic Stops-166, Suspicious Subject/Situation/Vehicle-52, Traffic Hazards-42, Alarms-34, Assist Citizen/Motorist Assists-33, Traffic Violations-31, Warrant Attempt Pickup-29, Property Damage Crashes-23, Shoplifting Complaints-20, Check Well-Beings-18, Disorderly Person or Subject-13, Threats-11, Civil Complaints-11, Larcenies-10, Assist Other Police Depts-10, and Personal Injury Crashes-10.

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month – was organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol. The program was started intending to target college-aged students who might be drinking too much as part of their newfound freedom. It is now a national movement to draw more attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism as well as how to help families and communities deal with drinking problems.   In 2022, Eaton County law enforcement agencies arrested 188 people on drunk driving related charges.  There were 161 drunk driving crashes, with 17 people being injured, 3 fatally.  There were 1,073 property damage crashes with 22 involving alcohol.   In 2022, Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested 12 involving Minors in Possession, and so far this year, there have been 4 involving Minors in Possession.

A big part of the work of Alcohol Awareness Month is to point out that people often underestimate the amount they drink, the duration of their drinking problem, the impact it has on their life, or overestimate their ability to control their drinking or to quit.   You can call or text American Addiction Centers at 866-242-1377 24/7 for support and locations of resources in our area.

Yours in Public Safety,

Sheriff Tom Reich
