[ARCHIVED] Weekly Update Article May 15, 2023

From May 7-14, 2023, Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 839 calls for service/events.  Our higher call volumes occurred in the following areas:  Traffic Stops-73, Traffic Violations-42, Suspicious Subject/Situation/Vehicle-36, Traffic Hazards-35, Check Well-Beings-30, Alarms-28, Property Damage Crashes-28, Shoplifting Complaints-23, Assist Citizen/Motorist Assists-22, Disorderly Person or Subject-17, Domestic Disputes-15, Unwanted Subject-12, Personal Injury Crashes-12, Unknown Problem-11, Larcenies-10, and Assist Other Police Dept-10.

Many Eaton County citizens, as well as citizens from surrounding counties, have taken advantage of our FREE Recreational Safety classes through the years.  I am proud to continue providing these classes that are taught by two certified members of the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office.  I wanted to remind you that next week is National Safe Boating Week and also marks the first of two Boating Safety classes we will be hosting this season.

The class next week is scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, May 23, 24, and 25.  The times are 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  The class is free and registration is done online at www.michigan.gov/DNR.  Click on Education and Safety, click on Recreational Safety and Hunter Education, click on Search for Classes, scroll to find the type of class you are interested in, click on View Upcoming Events, scroll to find the class being taught at the Eaton County Sheriff's Office, then click on View to register.

This is a course for all boaters, the personal watercraft operator; the hunter or fisherman operating an outboard utility boat; the skipper of a family ski boat; the sailing enthusiast.  All boaters must follow the same nautical rules, regulations and courtesies of the water.   All are subject to the same forces of nature while boating.

As boating is often a family activity, the course is of value to all members of a boating family.  While the content of the student manual serves as the basis for this course, it will also serve as a reference book in basic boating long after the course work is completed.  The course meets the educational standards of NASBLA, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, and features a final examination as required by Michigan Law.

Our complete 2023 schedule of classes is posted on our website and you can register now for any of the classes.  If you have any questions, please call Ashlee DeLand at 517-543-5257 or email her at Adeland@eatoncounty.org.  Thank you for your interest.

Yours in Public Safety,

 Sheriff Tom Reich
